Day 1, Saturday in Plovdiv Bulgaria

I left Sofia yesterday for Plovdiv a 2 hour drive southeast.

I am staying in Hotel Hebros a converted manor house originally built in the 18th Century Bulgarian textile company owner; it was also used in the past century as the headquarters for the Bulgarian Communist Party, when Communism ruled here.

It was cold, sunny and windy today. I am staying in the old town of Plovdiv, which was an old Roman Empire village in the period of the 1st Century. The Roman Amphitheatre that I took photos of today was built during the time of 190 to 220 BC.

I am fighting a cough, chills, sore throat, and now sneezing........so same old same old. Also all of the narrow streets and mews here are made of tricky to walk on cobble stones put into place by the Romans and Turks during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. For me it was strenuous to do my walking today but I did rack up 4 miles, which felt like 40 miles due to the cobble stones.

Here are the photos, I also have some here that was taken on Xmas Day when I skyped my Mr. Einstein. WOW do I miss him bossing me around. :)

As I am driving out of Sofia, a small group of cows held up traffic.
Arriving in the old town section of Plovdiv.

My hotel room in Hotel Hebros.

My car outside of the small hotel.

A lot of hills and steps in the old town.

An underground pass under to get to the other side of the street on a busy carriageway.

A local lad doin Balilika Beatles tunes.

 COming into the city centre.

 A drinking fountain.

These were put here by the Romans and later the Turks. Bulgaria has been conquered 5 differnt time by invading countries.

Everywhere one turns, steps and more steps.

In front of the art museum.

 Where else, hey?

 Art museum.

The Rhodopi Mountains in the background of Plovdiv. There is train service to the mountains by either of two train stations. One is called "Ugh" (yes I said Ugh)and the other is "Rhodopi."

An entrance to the old Roman Amphitheatre.

Where to buy the 5 Lev ($3.11 USD) ticket to get inot the amphitheatre.

 The amphitheatre.

A lot of cats in Plovdiv. No rats.

Literally "Arini." The p is the Cyrillic r, the h is the n, and the reverse n is i.

The stage area......All hail thee MacBeth, for that shalt be king hereafter.

The olde steps worn away from visits and time.

 The Rhodopi steppes.

Yet anothe Russian Orthodox church in Plovdiv.

 Really old manor homes.

 Churches up the gazoo.

Fools make feasts and con men eat them.

 An abandoned soccer (football) ball.

 OUCH!!!!!!!!!! Said me feet.

 The hotel cat.

Two of my mates waiting for me to give them some snacks. They followed me back to the hotel. I hope I don't have to pay extra for them. :)

Convenient for me to be able to park my car in front of the hotel.

Well tomorrow is my last day here before going back to Sofia and I will go and take more photos.

Cheers for now,

David
